Little Boy with Clubfeet Arrives in US
Brittanys Hope partners with Hershey Medical Center and the Degenhardt Foundation to bring child to US for surgery Read updates on Hieu Make a donation to help Hieu Hieu was born into a poor family in the rural region of Vietnam. His father passed away several years ago, leaving the family homeless. Hieu has three younger brothers, and the family currently lives with a grandmother. Hieu's mother works as a hired laborer, and earns very little income. Because of Hieu's disability and her poor circumstances, she made the difficult decision to send Hieu to the Soc Trang Rehabilitation Center. Hieu was born with a severe clubfoot deformity, but is in good health otherwise. He has adapted to his disability and walks on the tops of his feet. While in Vietnam, Candace Abel of Brittany's Hope Foundation met Hieu, and together with Degenhardt Foundation resolved to bring Hieu to the US for corrective surgery. The Degenhardt Foundation is handling arrangements on the Vietnam side working closely with the US Embassy, while Brittany's Hope Foundation is managing the US side. Dr. Lee S. Segal, chief of Pediatric Orthopedics at Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine in Hershey, PA, has generously agreed to do the surgery pro bono on August 14, 2007. The Children's International Fund of Hershey Medical Center, managed by Warren Smith, agreed to provide all other necessary services for Hieu free of charge. Binex Line Corporation of El Segundo, CA, has contributed a round trip airline for Hieu. A family in Elizabethtown is hosting Hieu during his stay. Hieu arrived in the US on a medical visa on July 2, and will be living with his host family until it is time for him to return to Vietnam. While in the United States, Hieu will need to undergo several surgeries and intensive physical therapy to correct his feet issues. Schreibers Pediatric Rehab Center has donated their physical therapy services and a wheelchair. Denisha Kline, a Brittany's Hope board member and physical therapist at Schriebers' has already met with Hieu. He will visit Dr. Edward White, DDS, of Elizabethtown Dental Associates as well. Hopefully, he will also participate in English classes, other activities, and have some fun times to remember. In spite of the involvement of his surgery, it will open doors for Hieu's future when he returns to his family and Vietnam. Brittany's Hope Foundation and Degenhardt Foundation are honored and proud to be a part of making a lifelong difference to sweet Hieu. Updates on Hieu
Hieu had his first surgery on August 14, 2007. One foot has been fixed, and his other foot will be operated on as soon as a pre-existing infection is cleared up. Hieu may also require spinal surgery, an unforeseen development. He is recuperating at home with his foster family.
